Other Committees and Councils

 

We encourage faculty, staff, and students to take an active role in policy-making. Contact the Senate Office or Senator Allison Vaughn if you are interested in serving on any of our many Committees, Councils or Boards.

Details regarding the membership and responsibilities of Other Committees and Councils (referred to as Senate-appointed committees) are delineated in the Committees and Councils section of the UNIVERSITY POLICIES.

  • to improve the relationship between faculty and the Aztec Shops Bookstore by reviewing bookstore policies, textbook requisitions, sales data, and custom course packets.

  • construction of new buildings and modification of existing ones
  • roads, landscaping, and parking
  • naming of rooms and buildings
  • location of monuments, works of arts, and signage

Primary focus areas:

  • ensuring that campus fees are established or adjusted in accordance with California State Fee Policy Executive Order 1102 (and its successors) and Trustees' Policy
  • advising the President on establishment and adjustment of Category II and III fees
  • advising the President on the reasonableness of Category II and III fee proposals - whether targeting new fees or the deletion, adjustment, or reclassification of current fees

  • guidelines for the implementation of provisions of the Copyrights, Trademarks, and Trade Secrets policy (submitted for approval to the Vice President for Research and the University Research Council)
  • the extent of institutional support involved in the completion of intellectual property (with recommendations to the Vice President of Research on the assignment of ownership rights and division of royalties)
  • advisement (to the Vice President of Research) on other intellectual property matters

  • campus-specific issues relating to compliance with Executive Order 926 (or its successors) and Coded Memorandum Academic Affairs 2014-08, and applicable federal and state laws and regulations

Primary focus areas:

  • policies and procedures on the health, safety, and learning conditions of the campus environment (to include: sidewalks, walkways, and pedestrian malls; classrooms, laboratories, and work areas); and restrooms, stairwells, elevators, and hallways)
  • investigation of such problems/issues as health, hazardous materials and waste, safety, emergency preparedness, excessive noise or traffic, and other matters that detrimentally affect the campus environment

Primary focus areas:

  • assistance with development of policies, procedures, and directions for extended education programs - including University-wide special sessions
  • review of and recommendations for proposed noncredit certificate programs with the Dean of Extended Studies (as well as the Provost)
  • review of and recommendations for external degree programs that parallel those offered on campus
  • identification of extended educational needs for the University service area
  • communication with faculty and the general community about the purpose and function of extended service programs
  • problems regarding self-support programs (and recommendations for alternative options)

  • the nomination of faculty for the following honors and awards: emeritus status, Senate Excellence in Teaching Award, Alumni Award for Outstanding Faculty Contribution to the University, SDSU Diversity Excellence Award, and such other honors and awards as the Senate shall designate

  • to provide advice regarding the regulation and management of campus activities that fall under the University's freedom of expression policy
  • to receive, evaluate, and advise the President on complaints regarding freedom of expression activities

  • review and evaluation of student learning outcomes assessment in General Education courses

  • review and recommendation of nominations for honorary degrees forwarded from the President's Office (initially received from the campus community and the Chancellor's Office)

Primary focus areas:

  • assistance with developing long-range master plans (with members working with the Directors of Instructional Technology Services, the Library, the Academic Affairs Information Technology Coordinator, and the campus instructional/information technology offices)
  • consideration of other matters referred to it by the Senate or University administrators
  • consideration, at its own discretion, of other matters relating to instructional and information technologies at the campus or CSU system-wide levels
  • review of and feedback on campus information technology initiatives as related to instruction, research, and operational needs

Primary focus areas:

  • primary advisory body to the President on varsity intercollegiate athletics
  • represents all segments of the University community interested in athletics at SDSU
  • make recommendations to the President about the entire intercollegiate athletic program offered by the Department of Athletics
  • Subject to the President's approval, develops policies that guide administration of the intercollegiate athletics program by its Director (for example, on such matters as income and expenditure budgets, grants and other financial aid to student-athletes, eligibility of student athletes, ticket distribution policies, etc.)

  • policies and procedures to enhance the University's international activities
  • existing involvement in international activities and related resource commitments
  • program improvements as well as opportunities for development

  • development of policy, program, and curricular proposals
  • review of other policy and curriculum proposals that affect the Liberal Studies program
  • holds primary responsibility for recommending policy and program changes, and may request the assistance of external specialists

  • Library policies and programs
  • other matters relating to Library policy and planning

  • reviews recommendations from Departments and Schools, Department Chairs and School Directors, Colleges, and Deans regarding reappointment, promotion, and tenure.

  • promote, encourage, and publicize the research activities necessary to carry out SDSU's educational mission and improve the University's instructional programs
  • Responsibilities include
    • recommendation of policies for the creation of interdisciplinary research bureaus and institutes (and routine reviews of their activities)
    • promotion of University-wide research lectureships on topics of general interest
    • faculty assistance regarding fellowships and grants
    • development and recommendation of University policies on patents and copyrights, etc.

  • review (on a regular basis) of and feedback on assessment reports for each degree

  • regular review of student services related issues of interest to the campus community
  • recommendations of policies and procedures for administration of financial aid programs (to ensure conformity with legal requirements of agencies granting financial aid)
  • advisement (to the Director of Financial Aid) regarding students whose financial situations warrant special consideration
  • promotion of University-wide understanding of and assistance with financial programs (particularly through the Assistant Deans of Student Affairs)

  • hears and seeks redress of student grievances concerning members of the faculty, administration, or staff

    bodies,
  • receive copies of Executive Orders or other instructions to the campus dealing with sustainability
    and report on them to the Senate,
  • serve as a resource to faculty, staff and students wishing to undertake research, or propose
    curricular changes, or pursue sustainable practices,
  • communicate these activities and outcomes to the Senate, campus, and the broader community.

  • advise the Dean of Education on various programs for the preparation of teachers and other school personnel

  • oversight of an integrated approach to undergraduate excellence at SDSU
  • recommendation of new policy for the Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement as well as changes to existing policy
  • supervision of specific University-wide undergraduate programs such as, but not limited to, the Undergraduate Writing and Graduation and Retention Subcommittees
