Standing Committees
We encourage faculty, staff, and students to take an active role in policy-making. Contact the Senate Office at [email protected] or Chair of Committee on Committees and Elections David Marx at [email protected] if you are interested in serving on any of our many Committees, Councils or Boards.
Section 2.0 of the Senate Bylaws covers committee appointments, records, operation, reporting, dissolution and terms of service.
Details regarding Standing Committee (referred to as Senate committee) membership and responsibilities are delineated in section 3.0 of the Senate Bylaws.

Primary focus areas:
- issues of academic philosophy, standards, and conduct as well as the appropriateness of present and proposed programs, degrees, majors, options, and concentrations
- faculty-student relations
- governance of the University
- other matters of academic policy
Primary focus areas:
- procedures for and supervision/administration of all elections of members of the Senate
- procedures for and supervision/administration of all elections within the Senate (including elected Officers and elected members of all Committees - excluding CCE)
- certification of vacancies in the Senate and Senate-appointed Committees (as well recommendations to the Senate for filling those vacancies as they arise)
- eligibility for election or membership in the electorate (in case of doubt)
Primary focus areas:
- the Senate Constitution and Bylaws as well as University policies (recommending changes as warranted)
- interpretation of texts of Senate-approved documents referred to it
- the list of Senate and Senate-approved Committees and of the membership and functions of each (recommending revisions as warranted)
Primary focus areas:
- University-wide programs for the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students.
- advice to University administration (subject to approval of the President) regarding prohibited discrimination, equal opportunity, outreach, and related matters.
- other advisement as requested (for example: to Enrollment Services, student organizations, Departments and Schools, the Office of Employee Relations and Compliance, etc.)
Primary focus areas (in conformance with the Unit 3 faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement [CBA]):
- policies concerning the selection and evaluation of academic tenure, promotions, sabbaticals, academic privilege, and separation from the University
- advice to the President on staff issues and the selection of administrative personnel
Primary focus areas:
- undergraduate curriculum proposals (to include additions, deletions, and changes), with special consideration to items of an interdepartmental or University-wide interest
- undergraduate curriculum proposals reviewed by the Deans and by the Undergraduate Council
- a curriculum proposal requested by a person, Department, Dean, or College curriculum committee
Subcommittees:
- Special Topics
Primary focus areas:
- allocations of University resources
- University budgets and their allocation, allocation of facilities and positions, and allocation of special funds
- patterns of previous expenditures (with members proposing changes as they may affect instructional programs)
- general policy recommendations associated with present and future resource decisions
